Bye bye Bali

Kære venner,

Blot en kort update fra os. Efter en måned, der er gået alt for hurtigt, har vi nu sagt farvel til Indonesien, Bali og Lombok. Faktisk kom vi slet ikke tilbage til Bali. Dagene på Gili Øerne og på Lombok var så behagelige og dejlige – også takket været godt dansk selskab af Tina og hendes datter Sofia – at vi blev helt indtil fredag.
Tina har tidligere været gift med en mand fra Lombok, og vi var to gange inviteret til mad hos hendes eks-svigerfamilie. Det gav masser af dejligt mad samt et godt indblik i, hvordan en almindelig indonesisk familie lever.
At vi blev så længe på Lombok medførte, at både fredag og hele lørdage var "fulde" rejsedage op til 16 timer. Fredag med bil, færge, bus, fly og taxa til Jakarta, hvor vi overnattede for at nå flyet lørdag eftermiddag til Kota Kinabalu på Borneo, hvor vi nu ser frem til at skulle være de kommende fire uger. Vi opholder os i den malaysiske del af Borneo, der er verdensberømt for sin natur med jungle, bjerge og koraller. Vi har planer om at besøge nogle øer, at hilse på urang utangerne og Lukas er meget optaget af at tage et dykker kursus. Vi må se, hvad det bliver til.
Her i Kota Kinabalu er vi flyttet ind på et rigtigt backpaper-hostel med masser af unge mennesker. Wybke og jeg føler os godt 20 år tilbage i tiden. En ganske behagelig fornemmelse. Lukas og Sofia har kastet sig over internet-terminalerne. Efter næsten tre ugen uden at være online var de ved at få abstinenser.
Vi hører, at foråret er kommet til Danmark. Dejligt. Vi har stadig den første grillpølse til gode.

Liebe Freunde,
Heute nur eine kurze Nachricht von uns. Nach fast einem Monat haben wir jetzt Indonesien verlassen. Ein etwas wehmütiger Abschied. Das Land, die Leute und vor allem die Natur og die Strände waren ein tolles Erlebnis. Ausserdem hatte wir die Moglichkeit eine indonesische Familie kennenzulernen. In unserem Hotel trafen wir Tina aus Kopenhagen. Sie war früher mit einem Indonesier verheiratet und besucht jetzt regelmässig sammen mit ihrer Tochter Sofia (9 Jahre) ihre Ex-Schwiegerfamilie auf Lombok. Unsere Sofia und Lukas waren u.a. mit ein paar Jugendlichen aus dem Dorf mit dem Moped unterwegs.
Zwei Tage dauerte die Reise von Lombok über Bali und Jakarta nach Kota Kinabula im malaischem Teil von Borneo, wo wir uns jetzt einlogiert haben. Auf Borne freuen wir uns auf viel Natur, Tiere und Wasser. Lukas möchte unbedigt einen Tauchkurs machen, und Wybke wird ihn auf jeden Fall mitmachen. Ob Sofia und ich auch dabei sind, muss sich noch zeigen.

Hi family and friends

Greetings from Kuta Kinabalu, Borneo. We arrived last night so more about this place in the next letter.
Bali, Lombok,Komodo Island and Gili Air... this is only a very small part of Indonesia we have seen but also a very nice part. We didn’t travel a lot this time as we found a very nice hotel in Sengigi on Lombok (large island next to Bali) we also stayed here because we met a very nice 9 year old girl from Kbh, Sofia, who was visiting family together with her Danish mother, Tina. Tina had been married to an Indonesian man and had lived in a small and very poor village.
During the day the kids played in the pool and had a good time. Tina invited to have supper at her family in the village. Cousins, aunts, uncle and grandmother were all sitting on a rug on the floor, in a room. The food was served and tasted delicious, but we just aren’t used to sitting on the floor and it didn’t take long before the back og bum were sore!
Another thing that is very different here to home is that children drive around on scooters without helmets! And sometimes they are 4 on one scooter. Lukas and Sofia were invited for a short ride. We said ok because it should only be in the village, only a short trip and only with helmets. Yes, right. The young cousin took our kids and little Sofia on one scooter, drove through the entire town and didn’t fetch a helmet! Tina speaks Indonesian so the cousin got told off without us understanding a word...but this is Asia and the kids came back without any bruises or broken legs.
The day we left Lombok we didn,t have delicious food. At the airport the children wanted to eat at Kentucky Fried Chicken and the next day, Uwe and I had the runs! So now we call it "Ken fucking tried chicken" ...and got sick!
Anyway, we had a lovely time and is was difficult to leave.
Now plans are: 3 weeks Borneo with snorkeling and watching urang utangs in the jungle. Lukas wants the diving-certificat so he can swim with sharks and sea-snakes- he is crazy!
So maybe in the next letter you will have pictures of us and the urang utans and Lukas in the mouth of a shark!
